Rotary Cutting Basics for Quilting: Rulers, Mats, Cutters and Blades

A rotary-cutting setup can make repeated fabric cuts faster and more consistent, especially for quilting and patchwork. The basic system combines a rotary cutter, a compatible blade, a cutting mat, and a ruler that can guide straight or shaped cuts.

Start with a cutting mat

A cutting mat provides a dedicated work surface for rotary cutting and helps protect the table underneath. Choose a mat large enough for the fabric pieces you commonly cut so you can position fabric and ruler without constantly moving the work.

Use a ruler for alignment

Quilting rulers help measure fabric and guide the cutter. Grid markings can assist with aligning edges, checking dimensions, and repeating strips or blocks. The useful ruler size depends on the project: smaller rulers can be convenient for detail work, while longer rulers help with wider strips and larger pieces.

Choose a rotary cutter you can control

A rotary cutter uses a circular blade to cut as it rolls along the fabric. Hold the ruler securely, keep fingers away from the cutting edge, and cut only on a suitable mat. Follow the cutter manufacturer's handling and blade-changing instructions.

Replace worn blades

Keep scissors available too

Rotary tools are excellent for many straight and repeated cuts, but they do not replace every cutting tool. Scissors and shears remain useful for trimming, curves, detail work, garment sewing, and tasks where a rotary cutter is not the best fit.

Simple rotary-cutting workflow

  1. Press or smooth the fabric so the section being measured lies flat.
  2. Place the fabric fully on the cutting mat.
  3. Align the ruler with the required measurement or fabric edge.
  4. Keep the ruler stable and fingers clear of the cutter path.
  5. Guide the rotary cutter along the ruler edge using controlled pressure.
  6. Close or secure the cutter immediately after the cut according to its design.
